3. Showing respect to your audience and earning theirs— the credibility of the information you’re presenting and your personal credibility are deeply intertwined.

Randall Bolten is the author of "Painting with Numbers: Presenting Financials and Other Numbers So People Will Understand You,” published in 2012 to glowing reviews. His 30-year career as a Silicon Valley financial executive, which provided the inspiration for “Painting with Numbers,” includes 20 years as CFO for both public companies and startups, and also senior finance positions at Oracle and Tandem Computers. In addition to providing CFO-related services, he currently teaches (U.C. Berkeley, Coburg University), speaks, leads workshops, and writes extensively on communicating numbers effectively; and operates Lucidity, his consulting practice.
