Two in One: AFP Annual Conference Volunteer Offerings Double

AFP Annual Conference attendees will have the opportunity to be part of AFPAware Community Service Day and give back to Washington, DC, the community hosting the biggest event in treasury and finance. BBVA Compass is the sponsor of AFPAware Community Service Day for the fifth consecutive year.

In past years, AFPAware focused on one volunteer opportunity. This year, AFPAware volunteers can assist two organizations: Horton’s Kids and Build-a-Bike. Both activities will help organizations and kids living in the District of Columbia. Register here to volunteer.

Horton’s Kids
Horton’s Kids is a community-based organization that supports children in a neglected community. Now in its 25th year, Horton’s Kids’ mission is to empower at-risk children and prepare them for successful and healthy lives through educational opportunities and comprehensive programs tailored to their needs.

AFPAware volunteers will perform two activities to help Horton’s Kids: a community cleanup and preparing afterschool snack bags. “Horton’s Kids is part of Washington DC’s Adopt-a-Block program and is responsible for trash pickup on three streets surrounding our Community Resource Center and the neighborhood that we serve,” said Sveta Wilkson, development director for Horton’s Kids. “These are streets that see a lot of foot traffic as many of the children walk to school and residents walk to their destinations, not having access to cars.”

Volunteers also will help Horton’s Kids prepare healthy after-school snacks. Horton’s Kids provides snacks to children four times a week, in addition to hot meals and weekend food bags, which allow for the children to have access to food seven days a week.

Build-a-Bike
Build-a-Bike also helps DC-area kids by donating bicycles that they can use to get around the city, to school and to afterschool jobs. But the program offers AFPAware volunteers something more. “It’s a team-building event,” said Joe Jessop, a spokesman for Build-a-Bike. “It’s about cooperation and collaboration and competition. Then, we donate the bikes they build to a local charity for kids. It’s tons of fun and it’s very meaningful.”

Jessop said that assembling a bike from scratch reveals how people act and think about group projects. “It actually gets pretty challenging when you have six people putting together one bike,” he said. “You put different personalities together, and some want to read the directions and some want to just get going. You have to learn how to work together and communicate otherwise you won’t get very far.”

AFPAware 5K Fun Run/Walk
AFP Annual Conference attendees can also start their day with an invigorating 5K Fun Run/Walk around the nation’s capitol. The AFPAware 5K Fun Run/Walk is sponsored by PNC.

The event takes place Monday, November 3, 6:00-7:30 a.m. Click here to register. Space is limited. This is a rain or shine event.

Participate in a Paintfest
The Foundation for Hospital Art’s mission is to give comfort and hope to those who suffer in hospitals by providing them murals at no cost in order to soften the experience for patients, families and hospital staff. Paintfest is sponsored by BBVA Compass.

The murals for the Paintfest are pre-drawn by Foundation for Hospital Art artists and color coded. Attendees have the opportunity to paint during the opening exhibit hall reception on Sunday, exhibit hall hours on Monday and exhibit hall hours on Tuesday until 2 p.m.

Murals are displayed and presented during the closing general session. The murals are touched-up, signed to acknowledge the sponsorship and then donated to hospitals around the country to soften the experience for patients, families and hospital staff.
