From AFP’s President: Time to Focus on Your Profession

This is my favorite time of the year.

For me, autumn means one thing: It’s time for the AFP Annual Conference.

I know what you’re thinking: “He’s trying way too hard to promote AFP Annual Conference.” Hear me out.

The 2015 AFP Annual Conference in Denver will be my 18th that I have attended. You might think that after 16 or 17 conferences I’d be a little jaded, perhaps slightly nonchalant about number 18. You’d be wrong.

The one thing that never fails to amaze me about AFP Annual Conferences, the one observation I continually make at them, the one takeaway I always leave with, is this: the energy of the attendees. Pick an adjective to describe them: Passionate. Animated. Thrilled. Excited.

You get the idea. AFP Annual Conference attendees are not sentenced to go by mean bosses. Attendees do not walk the hallways with glum expressions on their faces. They don’t fall asleep in sessions.

Instead, AFP Annual Conference attendees eagerly walk the aisles and exhibitor floor, greeting old colleagues, making new friends, learning new ideas, meeting prospective vendors. AFP Annual Conference may be the only time of the year when attendees can get away from the daily grind and really think about what they do—with like-minded individuals. Not one of the 6,500-plus attendees takes this opportunity for granted.

I can’t tell you how gratifying it is for me and my colleagues at AFP to be with, and interact with, attendees. It’s truly the most gratifying time of the year for us because we see firsthand how meaningful and valuable our efforts are to treasury and finance professionals.

No matter what my state of mind is prior to Annual Conference I know that I’ll leave with a smile on my face and an extra bounce in my step. And the good feelings from Annual Conference will carry me through all the way to next autumn.

So to all AFP Annual Conference attendees in Denver, I have one simple message.
