Dirty Work: Mike Rowe to Keynote AFP 2017

October may feel like a long way off, but it will be here before you know it. At AFP, we know that time flies by quickly, and that’s why we’ve already announced our all-star lineup for AFP 2017 in San Diego. Housing opens this Thursday, so there’s no better time than now to register for the most important event in treasury and finance.

Lessons from the Dirt

Can someone who’s made a career out of getting his hands dirty teach treasury and finance professionals about teamwork, efficiency, and the determination to succeed? One man can—Mike Rowe, host of Dirty Jobs, the popular TV show that took him to all 50 states to complete 300 different jobs. During the Sunday keynote session, Rowe will share the surprising lessons he’s learned from his time traversing the country. In the process, attendees will see the enormous but forgotten benefits of hard, honest work, and how it affects everything from our national identity to our infrastructure and the economy.

Seismic Shifts in the Global Economy

At this year’s Certification Luncheon, Rana Foroohar, Global business columnist and associate editor of The Financial Times, will share her insights about the shifts occurring in globalization and the political economy. Foroohar has written extensively on China and the next global recession, Europe’s economic crisis and what the rise of “localnomics” means for American business. Her book, Makers and Takers: The Rise of Finance and the Fall of American Business, was a finalist for the 2016 FT & McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award.

Blockchain Revolution

Don Tapscott, co-author of Blockchain Revolution: How the Technology Behind Bitcoin Is Changing Money, Business, argues that the technology likely to have the greatest impact on the global economy has arrived, and it’s not big data, artificial intelligence, self-driving cars or solar energy; it’s blockchain. Tapscott will show practitioners in attendance why blockchain will not only transform financial services, but also alter the structure of the corporation, animate the internet of things, recast the role of government, and fix the music industry, while having profound implications for competitiveness, business strategy, architecture, and leadership.

Inventing the Future: Thriving in a World of Constant Change

Massive change is a permanent feature of the business landscape. Mature businesses are under pressure to evolve rapidly and new startup ventures face a throng of global competitors. Robert Tercek, author of Vaporized: Solid Strategies for Success in a Dematerialized World, will share five proven strategies for identifying opportunities in a chaotic field, motivating a team to unite around an inspiring vision and execute what was previously unimagined. It’s no longer sufficient to respond to change, Tercek explains. Every leader must anticipate change, seek it out, understand the dynamics that propel it, and seize control and drive change. The best way to thrive in the future is to take an active role in its creation and evolution.
