Congratulations! You have successfully passed the CTP exam. The CTP Certification is valid for three years. This means that recertification is something that you have to think about down the road. How do you recertify? How do you stay on top of developments and new ‘stuff’?

There are many avenues available to you. AFP presents a three-day Annual Conference every year at different places around the country, with instructional sessions on many current and ongoing topics. Additionally, AFP offers many educational sessions throughout the year. Most of these educational offerings are online and do not involve travel or lodging—you simply need a computer, an internet connection, and an hour or two. AFP also has as online discussion boards where any member can post questions and receive information from other practitioners.

On a local level, joining a regional AFP associations in your area is another great way to keep your knowledge current. These associations exist in many of the larger cities around the U.S., and many of them hold small one or two-day conferences. There are also regional payments associations that provide educational sessions on many topics and occasionally need volunteers for different focus groups.

The single most important thing needed to stay on top of the treasury field is a big bump of curiosity. Knowing that there are others out there doing what you do, but doing it in different ways, should be enough to inspire you to find others to talk to and ask questions. There are many resources, some listed above, but another place to start is with a banker or CPA acquaintance. Volunteering, both within the company or in the community, is another possibility.

Like so many other things, be passionate about treasury. If that is not possible, find what your passion is, and follow it. You’ll be much happier.
