One of the challenges for any retail operation is sustained expansion after an initial spurt, something that often cannot be accomplished through organic growth alone. Oded Shein, the treasurer of Belk Stores, the Charlotte-based department store chain, is committed to an ambitious plan of growth that has included several major acquisitions, our cover story in this issue of Exchange. Acquisitions also played a role in the growth of AMC Theatres, whose treasurer, Terry Crawford, speaks on the topic of M&A at the AFP Retail Forum this month in Seattle. Retail continues to be an important industry group with AFP.
