As vice president and treasurer of Land 'O Lakes, based in St. Paul, MN, Pete Simonse is responsible for all aspects of financing, investor relations, cash and equity management, as well as the car fleet, and building and office services. This includes managing building operations, security, records management and real estate.
Land 'O Lakes is a cooperative owned by farmers and farm cooperatives. Of its $7.5 billion in revenues, half come from dairy food—butter, cheese and other dairy products, and the other half are from agricultural products—crop seed and animal feed.
Simonse joined AFP in 1996 and became a CCM (later CTP) in 1997. "That's when I was working in the treasury department of AMOCO Corporation," explained Simonse. "I had just taken responsibility for AMOCO’s short term borrowings and investments. I wanted to get a firmer grounding in the cash management area."
"I particularly like to go to the AFP conference. It’s a great way to meet other treasury practitioners and vendors and find out what exactly is current."
Simonse's has presented at the AFP conference including a session featuring a case study on his company's acquisition of Purina Mills. "It was one of the things I was most proud of in my career. I was lucky to be involved in all aspects of the acquisition from start to finish: Financing, completion issues and some integration issues. It was a transforming deal for the company. It was probably the most challenging and most stressful. It was also the most fun and most personally rewarding. In order to do the deal we had to refinance the whole company. As a result of this deal we became an SEC registered company for the first time."
