The workshop is designed as a guide for those who need to understand state unclaimed property requirements and the risks associated with inadequate or inaccurate compliance. Concepts, industry terminology, the different types of unclaimed property, and a business’ basic compliance obligations are explained. Attendees learn about effective escheatment management topics, including risk minimization, mitigation and remediation; the framework for creating unclaimed property policies and procedures; examples of internal compliance organization schemes and the composition of the internal compliance team. Further, the realities of state voluntary disclosure programs, unclaimed property audits and non-compliance penalties and interest charges are discussed. To close the program, information about pertinent and current trends, recently enacted and pending legislation, regulation and interpretations will be provided.

Karen L. Anderson
Senior Vice President, Unclaimed Property Recovery and Reporting, LLC
Ms. Karen Anderson is Senior Vice President at Unclaimed Property Recovery and Reporting, LLC (UPRR). A 25-year veteran of the unclaimed property industry, Karen was the Illinois Unclaimed Property Administrator in the late 1980s and early 1990s after having served on the policy staff of an Illinois Governor. Later, Ms. Anderson became the first Director of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators and in 1996 she joined UPRR.
Karen holds a J.D. degree from Loyola University of Chicago’s School of Law and a B.A degree from Eastern Illinois University. Currently, Karen is the President of the Unclaimed Property Professionals Organization (UPPO) and a member of the STA Unclaimed Property Committee.
Vice President and Associate General Counsel, Unclaimed Property Recovery and Reporting, LLC
In addition to serving as Associate General Counsel, Will King is also a Vice President overseeing UPRR’s oil and gas industry programs and assisting holders with multi-jurisdictional compliance issues and providing audit defense guidance. Will has authored and co-authored several articles about unclaimed property issues, including a recent law review piece on due process considerations in state unclaimed property audits.
Will’s previous experience includes time in the litigation departments of Steptoe and Johnson, LLP in Washington, DC and Phelps Dunbar, LLP in New Orleans. He is a graduate of George Washington University and received his JD from Suffolk University Law School where he was a note editor of the Suffolk University Law Review and member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.
